The city is taking out the trash in more ways than one.
This week, Mayor Eric Adams said qualified homeowners will soon receive automatic rebate checks to cover the cost of the city’s new trash bins.
Each check will go to one- and two-family homeowners who receive the STAR or E-STAR tax credit. That covers the price of a single NYC Bin, which will be required for curbside pickup starting June 2026.
At the same time, the city is expanding its “Empire Bin” program.
The Department of Sanitation will roll out the large, rat-resistant curbside containers this fall in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. The bins will first be installed outside schools before expanding to every school and high-density residential building in Brooklyn Community District 2 next year.
And while New Yorkers focus on trash, the city is also preparing for the months ahead.
Salt spreaders and plows were spotted in Manhattan this week, rehearsing routes in advance of the winter season.
To talk about the city’s “trash revolution,” Acting Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan joined “Mornings On 1” Friday.
