Construction crews will be working from Sept. 19 through Sept. 22 at 5 a.m. on bluff stabilization measures in Del Mar on the railroad right of way for the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization Project.

A construction notice from the San Diego Association of Governments warned residents that there will be construction-related noise and required backup alarms from vehicles, bright lights in work areas that might affect homes along the bluff from 15th to 7th streets, and temporary closures of bluff trails during construction.

Workers with flags might be directing some traffic near residential areas.

Trains between Oceanside and Downtown San Diego will not be running while the work is ongoing.

The work is part of Phase 5 of the bluff stabilization project, which began in 2024 as part of an effort to protect the eroding bluffs from earthquakes, sea level rise and other factors. Phase 5 includes more support columns, drainage improvements, new retaining walls and native plants, according to SANDAG. The total cost for this phase of the project is an estimated $88 million, with federal, state and local funding.

Four phases of bluff stabilization that have taken place since 2003 between Coast Boulevard and Torrey Pines State Beach included more than 230 support columns, stabilization of headwalls and improved drainage.
