PHOENIX — For the second straight weekend, Valley drivers will have to deal with multiple freeway closures over the weekend.

In its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Sept. 19-22, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) said stretches of Interstate 10 and U.S. 60 will be closed.

Where will I-10 be closed over the weekend?

The eastbound lanes of I-10 will be closed between the Interstate 17 “Stack” interchange just west of 19th Avenue and the State Route 51/Loop 202 “Mini-Stack” interchange northeast of downtown Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

This closure is due to scheduled maintenance.

ADOT said drivers who want to avoid the closure can take southbound I-17 around downtown Phoenix and reconnect with I-10 near Sky Harbor International Airport.

Where will US 60 be closed over the weekend?

The westbound lanes of the U.S. 60 Superstition Freeway will be closed between Country Club Drive in Mesa and I-10 in Tempe.

This closure is due to pavement maintenance and will also include the on-ramps at Stapley and Mesa drives.

ADOT advised drivers who want to get to I-10 during this closure to go west on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to the southbound State Route 143 Hohokam Expressway to reach the freeway near the Broadway Curve.

Drivers who get off U.S. 60 at Country Club Drive can go west on either Baseline Road or Broadway Road to reach their destination.

ADOT added that the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 will be narrowed to three lanes in Tempe between I-10 and Rural Road overnight from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Other closures during this time include:

  • The ramp from westbound I-10 to eastbound U.S. 60.
  • The eastbound U.S. 60 on- and off-ramps at Mill Avenue.
  • The eastbound U.S. 60 off-ramp at Rural Road.

Areas that could cause traffic headaches over the weekend

There are two other Valley freeways that won’t be fully closed, but could still cause issues for drivers over the weekend.

The south- and eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway will be narrowed to just one lane between Vee Quiva Way and 17th Avenue in Phoenix overnight from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday for pavement maintenance.

On the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway, the right two lanes will be closed between Gilbert and Cooper roads in Chandler overnight from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday due to the freeway widening project in that area.

The westbound on-ramp at Gilbert Road and off-ramp at Cooper Road will be closed during these times, as well.

ADOT added that the following ramps will also be closed:

  • The eastbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Price Road, which will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday.
  • The eastbound Loop 202 on-ramp at McQueen Road, which will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • The eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Cooper Road, which will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.

The westbound on-ramp at Arizona Avenue, the westbound off-ramp at Price Road and the westbound off-ramp at Alma School Road are all already closed due to this project.

Ongoing closures to keep in mind over the weekend

There are also a few other ramps around the Valley that are closed due to ongoing projects.

The off-ramp from the southbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway at Raintree Drive in Scottsdale is closed due to the freeway widening project in that area. This is the final long-term ramp closure for that project.

The ramp is scheduled to reopen in November.

Drivers can get off Loop 101 at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and then get back on the freeway at Raintree Drive to avoid this closure.

On the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway in Phoenix, the westbound off-ramp at 67th Avenue is closed, as is the eastbound off-ramp at 27th Avenue. This is also due to a freeway widening project. The 27th Avenue ramp is expected to open later this month and the 67th Avenue ramp is expected to open in October.
