Ethiopia’s outgoing central bank governor, Mamo Mihretu, has earned an “A-” grade in Global Finance’s Central Banker Report Cards 2025, which evaluates central bank performance over the past year.
The report, produced annually since 1994 by the New York-based publication founded in 1987, assesses nearly 100 central bank governors on inflation control, currency stability, and political independence.
In Africa, Kenya’s Kamau Thugge and Morocco’s Abdellatif Jouahri received “A” grades. Other African leaders in the A- category include Egypt’s Hassan Abdalla, South Africa’s Lesetja Kganyago, and Uganda’s Michael Atingi-Ego.
Mamo stepped down as governor on September 3 after serving since early 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw regulatory reforms in the banking sector and introduced new monetary policy tools.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has appointed Eyob Tekalign (PhD), former State Minister of Finance, as the new governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia. Eyob played a central role in the Homegrown Economic Reform programme and in coordinating debt restructuring efforts with international creditors.
