The Rocket Classic is consistently one of the lowest scoring PGA Tour tournaments on the schedule.
Only twice has the winning score been worse than 23-under par since the first time the Rocket Classic was held in 2019.
The cut-line ended up falling at six-under at the Rocket Classic, after Michael Kim’s three-putt on his final hole on Friday dropped it down from seven-under.
You know that they say about the PGA Tour – these guys are good!
One player in particular lived up to that motto on moving day in Detroit. And in doing so, he tied a long-standing PGA Tour record.
Numerous players went low, but one man stood out with a seriously scintillating run of form on his front nine.
Davis Thompson opens up on ‘chaotic’ front nine at the Rocket Classic
Last year, Davis Thompson was actually compared to Scottie Scheffler. Those shouts now seem to have been slightly premature, but the young man definitely has serious talent.

He carded a six-under par round of 66 on day three of the Rocket Classic, and he should be in with a shout of winning the tournament on Sunday.
However, his round certainly wasn’t what you would class as a run-of-the-mill one.
Thompson made an incredible three eagles on his front nine on Saturday – two of which came on par fours!
And he explained how rare that was, when speaking to reporters after his round.
He said: “It was pretty chaotic. I don’t think I’ve ever had that. I’ve had three eagles in a round before, but I haven’t had it all in one nine holes. Yeah, I didn’t make many pars on the front nine, but hopefully we can clean up the bogeys and keep the birdie and eagles going tomorrow.“
Nobody has had more than three eagles on one specific nine holes in the history of the PGA Tour, although Willie Wood and Scott McCarron have both had four in one round.
Matt Wolff had three eagles on his back nine at TPC Summerlin in 2020, while Willie Wood had three of the rare birds on the front nine at Cypress Point during the 1990 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The six winning scores at the Rocket Classic
If you are to win the Rocket Classic, you need to go seriously low.
Here are the past six winning scores from the tournament held at Detroit Golf Club.
And judging by how the leaderboard looks on day three, a score in the mid-20-under par range will probably be needed to lift the trophy this year.
However, whether Thompson is capable of firing a really low number on Sunday to reach that mark remains to be seen.
