Four people were killed and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on I-20 near Terrell on Saturday afternoon.
The Elmo Fire Department was dispatched at about 2:40 p.m. to a crash on westbound I-20 east of Hiram Road.
Three 18-wheelers and four passenger vehicles were involved in the crash, according to Elmo FD.
Preliminary investigation by the Department of Public Safety indicates traffic was backed up on I-20 when the driver of a red truck-tractor fell asleep behind the wheel, striking a Ford F-150 that had five passengers. The Ford was pushed into two other 18-wheelers, one of which jack-knifed. A Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang and Honda passenger vehicle were all struck by the 18-wheeler.
Firefighters identified four people who were deceased, two people with critical injuries and several people with less severe injuries. Patients were transported to Dallas-area hospitals for further care, according to firefighters’ reports.
One lane of eastbound I-20 has been reopened; the other lanes remain closed and will likely remain closed in both directions due to the severity of the crash, according to DPS.
