DALLAS — A Texas-based company, Colossal Biosciences, announced Wednesday that it is making strides toward bringing the dodo bird back from extinction.

The dodo has been extinct for approximately 400 years. The company is employing genetic engineering techniques to create a living version or “copy” of the bird.

Colossal Biosciences stated it has developed the technology to successfully culture specialized cells from Nicobar pigeons, the dodo’s closest living relative.

The company estimates that it will take at least five to seven years for the project to come to fruition.

In addition to the dodo, Colossal is also working on reviving other extinct species, including woolly mammoths and Tasmanian tigers.
