CHICAGO — Newly signed pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney was a healthy scratch on Sunday. Clowney, who signed during the week of the Bears game, attended the contest but was left watching.
There was a chance Clowney could play, but on Friday, team chief operating officer Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) it was doubtful Clowney would suit up.
“At the end of the day, I feel like he still needs a little bit of time to ramp up,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “He hasn’t played football. He wanted to go, but the concern would be if he had to play a lot of snaps, would he have been able to do that? He’s doing everything he can in his power to be ready to go. He wanted to go, but he understands it as well. [Had] really good conversation with him before the game.”
The Cowboys did activate defensive tackle Mazi Smith for the game. It was the first time this season that Smith, a former first-round pick, was active for a game. Rookie Jay Toia sat with Smith up for the game.

Smith wasn’t credited with any tackles.
“Mazi, last three weeks he’s been motivated and Jay understands,” Schottenheimer said. “Really, Jay did. It’s really nothing Jay did. It’s [that] Mazi has been consistent and showed us the flashes that we expect from him in practice.”
