Cristian Romero looks destined to leave Tottenham this summer.

The Argentine centre-back endured a difficult season in North London, featuring just 18 times in the Premier League due to injury.

The 27-year-old is contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2027 but it seems that he will not stay for the remainder of that deal.

The player has reportedly got his heart set on a move to Atletico Madrid after becoming increasingly frustrated with the way that Daniel Levy runs the club.

It seems like the World Cup winner will definitely leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as speculation refuses to go away.

A report from the print edition of AS (page 17, 29 June) claims that Diego Simeone’s side are intensifying their pursuit of the Spurs star.

It states that the Madrid outfit have been in talks with the Lilywhites hierarchy and the deal could be done next week for around £42.7million.

The latest report from Spain suggests that Levy is willing to back down on his reported £60m valuation of Romero.

That would be the right thing to do, as the last thing that Thomas Frank needs after joining the Lilywhites is an unhappy player who risks upsetting the dressing room.

The £42.7m fee is a decent amount for a player with two years left on their contract who has had the injury problems that the Argentinian has lately.

If they refuse to sell and keep the wantaway ace, then his value could tank if he has another season like the previous one, where he spent most of it on the sidelines.

The relationship between the N17 club and their star man seems to be beyond repair and it makes sense for both parties to move.

Spurs can use the funds to recruit a new defender and already have the likes of Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin, who are more than capable of stepping up if the 44-cap international departs.

They could also utilise young prospects, such as new addition Kota Takai and Luka Vuskovic, who had a promising campaign on loan at Westerlo in Belgium.
