Caltrans has announced it plans to close the northbound I-5 connector to the I-8 starting this Friday and ending early Monday.

The agency said that it plans to close all lanes of the north 5 from the 8 connector to Mission Bay Drive starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, September 26 through 5 a.m. Monday, September 29 in order to conduct roadwork and culvert replacement and repair.

Crews will rehabilitate pavement along the main roadway, shoulders, and freeway ramps while incorporating upgrades to improve performance, safety, and environmental conservation.

“Northbound I-5 motorists are advised to take alternate routes like State Route 163 or State Route 15 and Interstate 805 past I-8 to connect to I-5,” the agency said in a statement. “Northbound I-5 motorists traveling past SR-163 will be detoured to westbound or eastbound I-8.”

Additionally, the Moore Street onramp to the north I-5 in Old Town will be closed in order to limit the amount of traffic detoured to the 8. Onramps at Camino Del Rio West in the Sports Arena area, as well as Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road and Clairemont Drive will also be closed.

The northbound I-5 onramp from Mission Bay Drive will remain open, Caltrans said. All buses will run as usual.

Businesses near Damon Avenue should anticipate construction noise and lighting during the closure. Message signs will be visible along the routes suggesting alternate routes.

Caltrans said that this is the second of several full freeway closures for the I-5 Asset Management Project, which is intended to ensure that the southern segment of Interstate 5 remains in good shape. It is part of an overall effort to preserve existing infrastructure while also modernizing it.

This project is part of $1.6 billion worth of work in San Diego County and a segment of a $623 million investment to improve safety and infrastructure on the I-5, the I-805 and SR-78.

The work schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, or other construction considerations. More information, including traffic speed, lane, and road closures due to construction and maintenance activities, can be found here.
