1. Freedom Plaza casino proposal voted down, ending all Manhattan bids

Manhattan’s last remaining casino bid was rejected today, with an advisory committee voting against a proposal for Freedom Plaza, near the United Nations headquarters in Midtown East.

The vote ended all three bids to put a gambling center in the borough. Last week, two separate committees voted against casino proposals in Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen.

Councilmember Keith Powers, who represents the district and appointed a member of the committee who voted on the project, joined “News All Day” today to talk more about the vote.

Mayor Eric Adams and First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro, meanwhile, touted the economic benefits of casinos ahead of the vote.

2. Plan to redevelop Brooklyn Marine Terminal approved in key vote

A plan to redevelop the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Red Hook has passed after months of delay.

The Brooklyn Marine Terminal Task Force on Monday voted in favor of a $3.5 billion proposal that looks to transform the aging waterfront hub into a modern maritime port with thousands of new housing units, as well as commercial and green space.

3. ABC ends Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, and his show will return Tuesday

ABC will reinstate Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show in the wake of criticism over his comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, officials with the network said today.

ABC suspended Kimmel indefinitely after comments he made about Kirk, who was killed Sept. 10, in a monologue.

4. White House backs ‘border czar’ after reports he accepted cash during undercover FBI probe last year

The White House stood behind “border czar” Tom Homan today following reports that he had accepted $50,000 from undercover agents posing as businesspeople during an undercover FBI operation last year, leading to a bribery investigation that was shut down by the Trump administration Justice Department.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt characterized Homan’s encounter with the undercover agents as an effort by the Biden administration to “entrap one of the president’s top allies and supporters, someone who they knew very well would be taking a government position.”

5. Comic book opera takes flight at the Met

The 2025-2026 season at the Metropolitan Opera is underway, including the Met debut of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.”

The opera is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from Michael Chabon. NY1’s Roger Clark got a firsthand look.

6. John Goodman: Steering drivers in the right direction

John Goodman decided to volunteer as an AARP driver safety instructor last year, inspired by the value he found in similar classes.

Now, he teaches good driving habits and points out his observations about city roads, with a particular focus on issues that come with age — like vision and hearing changes. For helping drivers stay safe, Goodman is our New Yorker of the Week.
