ELLIS ISLAND, New York Harbor — Sailing takes a knowledge of the ways of water, but even four members of a New York City sailing team were taken aback by the prowess of a deer they filmed swimming in open waters.

Captured Sept. 16, the short clip shows a deer swimming in the Upper Bay by New York City, prompting a straightforward question: “Where is it heading?”

As I showed last month, I’m no stranger to silly, even strange, deer videos. But where the deer playing in a pond in July was silly and cute, this one’s trek has a lot of mystery around it.

According to the video’s description, four friends who are part of a New York-area sailing team were searching for a lost radio in the water off of Ellis Island. They saw something protruding from the water, thinking it was an object, their lost radio, perhaps, but were shocked to realize it was actually a deer and decided they had to film it.

I’m glad they did. The deer swimming with a city backdrop shows the collisions between nature and city living that can happen out there. While Utahns are hunting for deer next month, it’s entirely unclear what this deer is hunting for — maybe a wave to catch, a famed New York City hot dog to devour.

The description doesn’t tell us the deer’s fate.
