Often, when a team drafts a player billed as the next superstar, there are questions surrounding whether or not that player will live up to all the hype. In the case of Caitlin Clark, she appears to have done so early in her WNBA career.
Before the Indiana Fever superstar suffered an injury that sidelined her for many of the team’s regular-season games and the current playoff run, she continued to display impressive skills and immense talent on the court.
She also helped boost the league’s popularity, drawing more fans to attend games and increasing viewership of WNBA games to record levels.
Although she participated in only 13 games, she averaged 16.5 points per game, ranking her No. 13 in scoring among all WNBA players. Additionally, Clark averaged five rebounds, and her 8.8 assists per game were second-best in the league.
For her sophomore season, she also gained something she hadn’t really had as a rookie: an enforcer in new teammate Sophie Cunningham. The former Phoenix Mercury star recently shared her candid opinion about watching Clark play and what she has observed about her teammate.

“She is so phenomenal and so elite at her craft. A generational talent, I don’t think I have to hype her up anymore. In fact, we need to get her head a little bit down, and that’s what I’ve done,” Cunningham said during “The Young Man and the Three” podcast.
Amid the praise, Cunningham didn’t shy away from referring to Clark as a “big kid,” suggesting “she’s like one of my little cousins.”
“I’m just like, ‘Dude, you’re a dweeb. You’re the biggest dork I’ve probably ever met, and just somehow you know how to shoot from far out, and you’re really great at passing,'” she joked about her teammate.
Clark is the second superstar that Cunningham has been teammates with. During her time with the Mercury, she played alongside WNBA great Diana Taurasi. She likened Clark’s “maniacalness” to Taurasi’s.
“There’s just some things you can’t teach, and she has a lot of those things,” she said of the Fever superstar.
Clark and Cunningham have clearly formed a strong bond since becoming teammates. Even though injuries sidelined both Fever stars, they’re providing valuable support for their teammates as they continue what seems like an unlikely playoff run.
