SAN ANTONIO – Mental health remains a critical issue in San Antonio. This weekend, you can show your support by walking for hope, healing and awareness.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness, Greater San Antonio chapter, is hosting its 17th annual NAMIWalks — an event dedicated to shattering the stigma surrounding mental illness. It’s taking place Saturday, September 27th, at Morgan’s Wonderland.
You can sign up online, namiwalks.org/sanantonio, or register in person starting at 7:30 a.m.
Ed and Jackie Dickey first connected with the organization in 2005, when their daughter returned home from college and was dealing with a mental health crisis.
What began as a journey to understand how to support their daughter turned into a mission to educate and uplift other families facing similar challenges.
They helped organize San Antonio’s very first NAMIWalk and have been volunteering ever since.
“Relationships among other families who are learning about mental health disorders is one of the strongest ways to navigate success,” Ed Dickey said.
“There’s nothing like the empathy that comes from someone with your same lived experiences, and that’s what NAMI deals with. Our classes are taught by people with similar lived experiences,” Jackie Dickey added.
Whether you’re struggling yourself — or know someone who is — NAMI offers a range of education programs free of cost.
