Altrusa of Highland County

Altrusa of Highland County club members have been busy ordering, counting, sorting, stamping and delivering several thousand books for their literacy projects.

One of the club’s biggest projects is purchasing a new book for every student in Highland County preschool through grade five.

This project began many years ago and involved just a few grades.

Support from fundraisers (annual quarter raffle, book sales, memorial golf tournament), grants from South Central Power, Elks, Altrusa International Foundation and NCB bank gave the club the funds necessary to increase the number of grades served.

Recently the club has received donations from Merchants National Bank, Weastec, and Eagles Aerie 1161 which were used to support books for preschoolers and support sixth-grade teachers with needed literacy materials.

Club members have delivered 3,183 books to grades K-5 and 670 books to preschoolers in the county in one week.

Pictured are students from Hillsboro Elementary School and Bright Elementary School with their new books. Altrusans love the smiles, thank you messages, and excitement as students receive their books.
