Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Stephen Torpey as head of the academy.
The Manchester Evening News exclusively revealed in July that Torpey was being considered to succeed Nick Cox, and the club have now officially unveiled the appointment.
Torpey said: “It is obviously a great time to be joining as the club enters an exciting new era. I can’t wait to play my role in continuing the incredible tradition of youth development here.”
United’s statement said: “Stephen Torpey has started work as Manchester United’s new academy director.
“Joining from Brentford, Stephen’s appointment as successor to Nick Cox was announced in August. Cox has joined Everton, where he’ll serve as technical director.
“Torpey has recently led the rebuilding of Brentford’s youth structure, including the relaunch of a full academy programme from Under-9s to Under-18s. Prior to his January 2024 arrival at the west London club, he had led academy coaching across all groups at Manchester City, and at the foundation phase, with Liverpool.
“He began work at Carrington on Monday, and will attend the Under-21s’ exciting Premier League International Cup clash against Athletic Club at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.
“Everyone at the club gives a warm welcome to Stephen and wishes him the best of luck in his new role.”
In June, it was confirmed that Cox was to leave the academy after nine years of service to become technical director at Everton. During his time in charge, Cox has played a pivotal role in United’s academy’s renaissance, securing top youth signings and overseeing an FA Youth Cup triumph in 2022.
Torpey was previously at Manchester City, where he spent nine-and-a-half years in different positions, notably working closely alongside Jason Wilcox, director of football at United.
