Afghan Telecom has resumed limited internet services in Helmand through a “point-to-point” system, local sources said on Thursday.
The sources from the Taliban’s provincial telecommunications department said the service has been restored not only for public offices and banks but also for families since Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Similar limited point-to-point services have recently been reactivated in Balkh, Kandahar and Nangarhar, according to sources.
The move comes as the Taliban have cut fiber-optic and Wi-Fi internet access in 16 provinces for more than a week, citing efforts to prevent “immorality.”
Earlier this week, sources said Taliban officials in Herat instructed local internet providers during a meeting to shut down services every night. For the third consecutive night on Wednesday, internet access in Herat was blocked until 8 a.m.
Taliban have not publicly commented on the partial resumption of point-to-point services.
