Re “Parents fear losing disability protections as Trump slashes civil rights office” (Sept. 18): This article raises the concern that efforts to dismantle the special education system may undercut the potential that lies within all of us. I know because, in 1981, I became one of its recipients when I returned to school after flipping over on my motorcycle and landing on my head. I was 18 years old.
I wish the architects of this dismantling could know what I had to go through to achieve a full life. I received rehabilitation for more than a year and special education services for the next six years before graduating from San Diego State University and the University of Southern California.
Young adults with disabilities have much to offer that could not have been foreseen in advance. This is what elected officials need to understand. We can be productive citizens when given the chance to thrive.
