Get ready to howl for a new band called Howl Owl Howl.
Members of three ‘90s rock groups have teamed up for the new supergroup, featuring Hootie & The Blowfish singer Darius Rucker, R.E.M. bassist-vocalist Mike Mills and The Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman. Together, they are called Howl Owl Howl.
Billboard reports the trio has been friends for decades and started playing together a casually a few years ago. Now they’ve made their partnership official and will release their first song, “My Cologne,” on Oct. 31.
“It feels great to be singing with a rock band again. It’s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols,” Rucker told Billboard. “The stuff we’re writing is so different than anything I’ve tried to do before.”
Howl Owl Howl has also announced a series of fall tour dates, where they will perform new songs written by the group. They will also play two hits from each of the members’ original bands, Hootie & The Blowfish, R.E.M. and The Black Crowes.
Rucker, the voice of Hootie hits like “Only Wanna Be With You” and “I Cry,” is also known for his work as a solo country artist on songs like “Wagon Wheel” and “Alright.”
R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, but Mills reunited with bandmates Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Bill Berry last year when they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The alternative rock pioneers, also members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, are known for ‘80s and ‘90s songs like “Losing My Religion,” “Everybody Hurts,” ” “Shiny Happy People,” “Man on the Moon,” “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” and “At My Most Beautiful.”
The Black Crowes, featuring brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, had more than a dozen top 10 rock hits in the ‘90s like “Hard to Handle,” “Jealous Again,” “She Talks to Angels,” “Blackberry,” “Only a Fool,” “Twice as Hard” and “Remedy.” Chris Robinson joined Aerosmith guitarists Perry and Brad Whitford last month to perform as The Joe Perry Project.
