Day 12 of manhunt for NY murder suspect

  • September 25, 2025

RAY BROOK, N.Y. (WCAX) – The manhunt for a New York murder suspect has entered its 12th day, and state police on Thursday released a new photo and new information about the alleged killer.

For people living and working in Gabriels, the manhunt for 53-year-old Anthony Bechand has turned the quiet, scenic Adirondack hamlet on its head.

“Kind of puts you on edge a little bit, said Erin Montt, who works at the Brighton Mini Mart, just a short drive away from where police say Bechand ditched his truck. “I feel bad for the family, and I am sure they want to put this all behind them.”

Amanda Rodriguez, 41, was found stabbed to death inside a home on Earl Lynn Court in Cohoes on September 14. Police say Bechand, Rodriguez’s boyfriend, is their prime suspect.

Lorri Brown, the office manager at North Country Electric, says she reached out to police after learning the suspected killer could be in their backyard. “We have cameras. So, we had some footage and they came and took what they needed,” she said.

And police this week urged residents to check their trail cams for any suspicious activity. They also want hunters and others to be cautious as they continue their search efforts in the woods.

“If anyone has seen Mr. Bechand or has unknowingly given him a ride, we strongly encourage you to come forward,” said New York State Police Troop B Commander Maj. Peter Arcadi.

Authorities say evidence in Bechand’s truck suggests he has a wound on the left side of his body. They say he is still alive and likely not far from where he left his truck.

“I don’t think it was a well-planned effort. I don’t think he planned to run out of gas, you know, here in Gabriels, right? So, it’s things like that that make me believe he’s still in the area,” said Deputy U.S. Marshal Stu Smith.

Authorities say the nearly two-week manhunt has shades of the search for two inmates who escaped from Dannemora a decade ago. “It was earlier in the year then, so it was warmer, so the weather is definitely a factor now, but it’s the same type of terrain,” said Maj. Arcadi, who also took part in that search.

“I am definitely nervous at night letting my dog out when it’s dark. Not as much during the day, ‘cause you can see, but at nighttime it is definitely more unnerving,” Brown said.

Police say Bechand may be armed and dangerous, and you should not approach him. Just call 911. He’s described as a white man, about 5′11″ and 180 lbs., with hazel eyes and brown hair.

The U.S. Marshals are offering a $7,500 reward for information leading to his capture.
