1. Advisory committees vote to advance Queens, Yonkers casino proposals

Two advisory committees have unanimously voted to advance proposals to expand the Resorts World casino at Aqueduct Raceway in Queens and the Empire City Casino in Yonkers.

The Resorts World plan was the first bid to pass a Community Advisory Committee vote within the confines of the five boroughs. MGM Resorts’ plan for Yonkers was the first bid to pass a committee vote in the greater New York City area.

2. Judge plans speedy ruling on whether charges can be dropped against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

A federal judge said Thursday he’ll rule “very shortly” on a final bid by defense lawyers to get him to toss out two prostitution-related convictions that Sean “Diddy” Combs is scheduled to be sentenced for next week.

Judge Arun Subramanian listened to nearly 90 minutes of arguments by lawyers over whether the charges were properly brought against the Grammy-winning hip-hop producer.

3. Decades-old immigration cases brought back into the spotlight

Immigration lawyers say there has been a sharp rise in older immigration cases that the government is trying to put back onto the active docket.

One lawyer told NY1’s Eric Feldman he’s advised six adult children whose parents could face deportation that one of them should join the military to prevent that from happening. 

4. Off-duty officer shoots and wounds man inside Penn Station, police say

An off-duty New York City police officer shot and wounded a man in Penn Station during a chaotic confrontation that began aboard a stopped rush hour train, according to police and surveillance footage.

The officer and her husband, who is also a police officer, were waiting for a Long Island Rail Road train in plainclothes at 7 p.m. Wednesday when a 32-year-old man attempted to rob them, a spokesperson for the NYPD said.

5. Palestinian leader presents his vision for postwar Gaza during U.N. address, says Hamas will have no role

Speaking by video, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told world leaders gathered at the United Nations today that Hamas would have no role in governing the Gaza Strip after the war ends. 

Abbas condemned Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, saying the violence and abductions perpetrated by the group “do not represent the Palestinian people, nor do they represent their just struggle for freedom and independence.”

6. Bronx author shines spotlight on Hispanics in Hollywood

Rafael Rivera-Viruet, who was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in Mott Haven and was inspired by cinema and storytelling from a young age.

Rivera-Viruet is the author of “Hollywood… Se Habla Español,” which highlights Hispanic contribution to some of the most important movies made in the 20th century, like “Blackboard Jungle” and “The Mambo Kings.”

“Downtown/Uptown: New York in the Eighties” is a new art exhibition at the Lévy Gorvy Dayan Gallery on the Upper East Side.

It was organized in collaboration with legendary downtown gallerist Mary Boone. NY1’s Roger Clark got a firsthand look.
