Manchester United’s wait for a midfielder could see the club pounce on a stop-gap solution.

There is no doubt that Manchester United did some impressive summer transfer business, but one of the main stories from the window was about the position Ineos failed to address.

United’s options in midfield are light, and it is still unclear who the best partner may be for Bruno Fernandes.

United enquired about a move for Conor Gallagher at the deadline, and it is possible United return to check on the Atletico Madrid star’s availability in January.

But he is not the only potential stop-gap solution for United, with another midfielder with Premier League experience touted for a possible switch.

Manchester United could strike an ‘opportunistic’ deal in the January transfer window if the right option presents itself, claims Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs tells The United Stand that former Wolves star Ruben Neves could be keen on a return to the Premier League.

Neves signed for Al-Hilal for £47 million in 2024, and it is suggested that he could be eyeing a return to England to bolster his World Cup chances with Portugal.

Jacobs explains: “Keep an eye on opportunistic signings, six months out from a World Cup, that want to make a step up or, in some places, return back.

“Ruben Neves, for example, is one to watch; he’s a little bit older, so it would be more short term.

“I think there’s concrete possibility that Neves will leave Al Hilal.”

Ruben Neves could be ideal stop-gap

Ruben Neves is still only 28, and could have plenty to offer Manchester United in the short-term, whether it was a loan move or a permanent transfer.

Neves has 60 caps for Portugal and is still in their plans, but a move back to England could shore up his World Cup spot, and even elevate him into a regular starting berth if he can demonstrate his fit alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Neves has 177 appearances in the Premier League and has caused Manchester United problems during his time with Wolves, with a penchant for a long-range screamer. He has been linked with the Red Devils in the past.

He played alongside Matheus Cunha at Wolves for a short time, and with Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, Neves could settle quickly into the squad.

If United are looking at a short-term solution in January, Neves could be the most sensible midfield signing the club make.
