Waymo suspends service across metro Phoenix due to flash flooding

  • September 26, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Self-driving rideshare service Waymo is suspending service in the Valley as the region is pummeled with heavy rain, resulting in patches of flash flooding on Friday.

The metro area has seen major delays on freeways and at Phoenix Sky Harbor as storms cause torrential rain in several neighborhoods and fill up washes.

Social media posts have showed instances of the autonomous SUVs getting stuck in floodwaters, particularly in central Phoenix, where severe thunderstorms were reported. One image shared with Arizona’s Family showed a Waymo stuck because of standing water.

Company officials confirmed they’re working to get those cars off the road.

“We are coordinating closely with local officials and our teams are working diligently to support riders and remove affected vehicles from the roadways,” a statement from Waymo read in part.

At this time, it’s unclear how many Waymo vehicles may be trapped, and exactly how many passengers were affected.
