Sheriff Gonzalez said the men were reportedly pointing guns at each other.
HOUSTON — A 20-year-old Houston man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of another man during what the sheriff described as a “quick-draw” incident with handguns on Thursday.
Jaret Donovan Garcia was arrested and charged with the murder of Trinh Vinh Hoang Thuyen, 22, according to Harris County court documents filed Friday. The shooting happened at about 12:30 p.m. in a neighborhood southeast of Kuykendahl and Richey in north Harris County.
According to the criminal complaint, Garcia “intentionally and knowingly” caused Thuyen’s death by shooting him with a firearm. The document also alleges Garcia intended to cause serious bodily injury and committed “an act clearly dangerous to human life” when he shot the victim.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene and found Thuyen deceased, according to a social media post by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. The post indicated that Garcia and Thuyen “were reportedly playing ‘quick-draw,’ pointing semi-automatic handguns at each other, when Jaret allegedly shot and killed Trin.”
Garcia, who lives on Darrah Drive in northwest Harris County, was booked into the Harris County Jail following his arrest. His bond was initially denied, and he appeared before the 482nd District Court.
A judge granted the state’s motion for extensive bond conditions should Garcia be released. The conditions include electronic and GPS monitoring, a complete curfew requiring him to remain at home between midnight and 11:59 p.m., prohibition from possessing firearms or consuming alcohol or drugs, and restrictions on internet access and contact with minors under 17.
Garcia’s next court setting is scheduled for Sept. 29.
