PHOENIX — Waymo temporarily suspended its service in metro Phoenix as severe flash flooding drenched the area on Friday afternoon.

App users who opened the service received a message saying “Our service is currently paused.”

Waymo paused amid flash flooding across metro Phoenix

There’s good reason for the pause, as one Waymo got stuck in deep waters near 16th Street and Glendale Avenue in Phoenix.

KTAR News reporter Balin Overstolz McNair witnessed two passengers in the Waymo leaving, shuffling through the flooding in the streets to a sidewalk.

Earlier in the day, NWS issued a series of severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings as storm activity intensified across the region.

As a result of the flooding, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to multiple water rescues.

There is no estimated time for Waymo rides to be available again.
