Altadena gets a front-row view of LA Opera’s season-opening “West Side Story” on Saturday night, when the company beams its live performance from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to a large LED screen at Loma Alta Park, 3330 N. Lincoln Ave. The broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free to attend. A second simulcast will take place at the Santa Monica Pier.

The Altadena event is part of LA Opera’s annual countywide simulcast tradition and marks the first time the program has been staged in Altadena, according to the company. LA Opera says the high-definition relay uses multiple cameras inside the Dorothy Chandler to carry the performance outdoors in real time. L

Pre-show activities in Altadena begin at 4:30 p.m., and organizers will run a complimentary shuttle between John Muir High School (1905 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena) and Loma Alta Park from 4–11 p.m. The company lists the Altadena simulcast as free and open to all ages.

The production—conducted by James Conlon and staged by Francesca Zambello—features the original Jerome Robbins choreography. LA Opera lists Gabriella Reyes (Maria) and Duke Kim (Tony) among the principals, with Amanda Castro (Anita), Taylor Harley (Riff) and Yurel Echezarreta (Bernardo) also featured. English and Spanish subtitles will accompany the broadcast.

County officials have framed the twin broadcasts—“Opera in the Park” in Altadena and “Opera at the Beach” in Santa Monica—as part of a broader effort to bring main-stage performances to public spaces.

A listing on LA Opera’s website confirms Santa Monica’s start time at 7:30 p.m. (pre-show 5 p.m.) and notes family-oriented activities there as well. Coverage and listings from local outlets have also flagged the two locations and start time. (Information in this paragraph comes from LA Opera’s event page and local event roundups.)
