One of Chicago’s most classic ice cream institutions is opening a new location in the heart of the city.
The Original Rainbow Cone, a century old Chicago staple known for its signature five-flavor combo, is opening a new shop at 163 North Michigan Avenue on Monday, Sept. 29.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday.
The classic Rainbow Cone features chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), and pistachio almond ice cream topped with orange sherbert.
In addition to their classic cone, the location will also serve multi-flavored “sliced creations,” hand-spun milkshakes, made-to-order mini donuts, ice cream cakes, sundaes and more.
“To bring a treat as colorful and inventive as the Rainbow Cone to Michigan Avenue—one of the most iconic and heavily visited parts of the city—gives us the chance to introduce millions of tourists and downtown visitors to a South Side tradition that’s stood the test of time,” said Joe Buonavolanto III, Executive Vice President of Buona Companies, Rainbow Cone’s parent company.

The Original Rainbow Cone was created by ‘Grandpa Joe’ Sapp and his wife Kathleen in 1926 on the South Side of Chicago and became quickly popular for their stacked slice style of ice cream cone.
