Suspect charged in Southport mass shooting that killed three, injured several at American Fish Company

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – The Southport Police Department has arrested and charged a man in connection with Saturday night’s deadly mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport.

According to Southport Police Chief Todd Coring, officers arrested Nigel Edge for the deadly shooting at American Fishing Company that killed three and injured at least eight. According to court documents, Edge is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He’s accused of using a short-barrel AR rifle with a suppressor, folding stock and scope.

He is due in court on Monday at 2 p.m.

Three people are dead and at least eight others are injured after a shooting at the American Fish Company in Southport.

According to the City of Southport, three people were killed when someone opened fire on patrons at the waterfront bar from their boat at the Southport Yacht Basin on Saturday, Sept. 27, around 9:30 p.m.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring shared during a press conference around 1 a.m. on Sunday that six people were taken to the hospital with injuries. The City of Southport sent an update at 2 a.m. that at least eight people were injured. WECT reached out to see if two of the victims refused medical treatment.

According to the update, the suspect was seen heading toward Oak Island and the Intracoastal Waterway.

In a news release, the town of Oak Island said the person of interest was detained around 10 p.m., “the U.S. Coast Guard observed a single individual matching the description of the shooter, loading their boat at the public boat ramp at NE 55th Street in Oak Island. The Coast Guard crew detained this suspect, who is now being held by the Oak Island Police Department, and will be turned over to the Southport Police Department for questioning, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation.”

The conditions of the others injured are unknown.

“There is currently no known further credible threat to the public. Officers and Deputies from multiple agencies are in place to help ensure additional security for the greater area,” stated a news release from the City of Southport.

Chief Coring said the names of the victims will not be released until families are notified.
