New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that New York State’s first-ever inflation refund checks are now being sent to 8.2 million households statewide.

Over the last few months, many New Yorkers have been anticipating more news on when eligible residents could expect to receive a portion of New York State’s first-ever inflation refund check initiative.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s Office confirmed on Friday, September 26th, 2025, that the first round of inflation refund checks up to $400 are now being sent to 8.2 million households statewide.

“Starting today, we’re sending inflation refund checks to over 8 million New Yorkers because it’s simple — this is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets,” Governor Hochul said.

New Yorkers do not need to apply, sign up, or do anything to receive a check.

New Yorkers of any age who filed a 2023 New York State resident income tax return are eligible as long as they were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.

How Much Will New Yorkers Receive?

The amount of the check New Yorkers will receive will be based on the income and filing status reported for the 2023 tax year.

  • Joint tax filers with income up to $150,000 will receive a $400 check.
  • Joint tax filers with income over $150,000 but no greater than $300,000 will receive a $300 check.
  • Single tax filers with income up to $75,000 will receive a $200 check.
  • Single tax filers with incomes over $75,000 but no greater than $150,000 will receive a $150 check.

The checks, pictured above, will continue to be mailed out throughout October and November and will NOT be mailed out based on zip code or region. Some residents may receive their check earlier or later than their neighbors, according to the Governor’s Office.

Where is the Money Coming From for Inflation Refund Checks in New York?

Inflation has driven the costs of everyday necessities to all-time highs, and as a result, the State’s revenue from the collection of sales tax has also increased, according to the Governor’s Office.

Based on that, the Governor said she believes that money belongs to hardworking New York families and “should be put back in their pockets as an inflation refund.”

Approximately 924,000 mid-Hudson region New Yorkers are expected to receive checks. Here’s the full breakdown of which New Yorkers will receive a check based on region:

  • New York City 3.53 million
  • Long Island 1.25 million
  • Mid-Hudson 924,000
  • Western New York 585,000
  • Finger Lakes 513,000
  • Capital Region 475,000
  • Central New York 321,000
  • Southern Tier 251,000
  • Mohawk Valley 198,000
  • North Country 156,000

In total, 8.2 million New Yorkers are expected to receive checks.
