Klyde Warren Park will be featured in the Smithsonian Channel’s TV series How Did They Build That?, according to a news release from the park.
The episode, set to air Oct. 5 at 8 p.m., will explore the engineering prowess and community vision needed to transform a stretch of eight-lane highway into Dallas’ urban oasis. The 5.4-acre park opened in 2012, on a deck above Woodall Rodgers Freeway.
The idea of decking the freeway can be traced to the road’s controversial planning in the late 1960s, when there was considerable debate about whether the highway would be elevated or depressed into a trench. City planners would look to Chicago, Seattle, Houston and other cities for inspiration.
