SAN ANTONIO- Federal employees in San Antonio may face job uncertainty as a potential government shutdown looms.
Congressman Henry Cuellar expressed concern, stating, “We’ve never, never, never seen this before, where they are said, we’re going to have a shutdown, and we’re going to fire a mass number of people.”
Texas is home to approximately 224,000 federal employees, with about 38,000 in the San Antonio area. If a shutdown occurs, employees could risk working without pay or losing their jobs permanently due to “emergency layoffs.”

Congressman Greg Casar emphasized the importance of keeping federal services uninterrupted, saying, “We don’t need our national parks to close. We don’t need federal agencies and federal services to be interrupted.” Casar and fellow Democrats are committed to reaching a deal, aiming to keep the government open and maintain affordable health care.
The stalemate could also delay funding for infrastructure projects, with $625,000 in project funds at risk statewide, including $42 million earmarked for San Antonio.
While the Alamo, a national historic landmark, will remain open, the status of national parks like the San Antonio Missions remains uncertain.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has issued a statement after democrats refused to vote in favor of the GOP budget, with the federal government on track for a shutdown at midnight.
Senate Democrats’ rejection of the House-passed, clean Continuing Resolution proves they’d rather shut the government down than work across the aisle for the benefit of the American people.
The Left’s progressive base and allies in the media have conjured up an ignorant illusion that they can force Republicans to accept their demands in exchange for keeping the lights on, but that could not be further from the truth. By not voting with us on a bipartisan basis to fund the government, Democrats have ensured that Border Patrol agents, military personnel, and hundreds of thousands of other federal employees could be forced to work without pay, which is unnecessary and shameful.
The American people resoundingly rejected the Democrat Party up and down the ballot last November, instead delivering President Trump and Congressional Republicans a historic mandate. It is time for Chuck Schumer to stop his temper tantrum, come to terms with this reality, and negotiate in good faith before any more harm is done to our country.
If they don’t change course, Democrats should expect to face the same failures come next November’s election.
Cornyn’s offices will remain open during the course of the shutdown.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has released a statement on the failure of the Senate to reach a vote on the GOP-led spending bill.
Sen. Cruz said, “Senator Schumer and the Democrats have made it clear that they intend to shut down the federal government. Their demands include taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens and a reversal of the Republican reforms blocking handouts to able-bodied adults who refuse to work.
Americans voted for change under President Trump and a Republican Congress. We should not allow the Democrats’ efforts to succeed.
