According to a BCSO statement, Adriana Lastra, 27, was booked into the Bexar County Jail on April 1 on a charge of Assault on a Peace Officer.
The sheriff’s office says on June 23, a sheriff’s deputy was conducting a routine check in the Jail Annex 11 minutes ahead of schedule when they discovered Lastra attempting to take her own life. The deputy immediately intervened, using a cutting tool designed for suicide attempts and began life-saving measures.
Facility medical staff took over until first responders with the San Antonio Fire Department arrived and transported Lastra to University Hospital for further treatment.
According to BCSO, on the evening of June 26 at approximately 10:29 p.m., after consulting with medical personnel, Lastra’s family made the decision to remove her from life support. She was pronounced deceased at University Hospital.
In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Castle Hills Police Department is handling the death investigation, while the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a concurrent administrative review,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Sunday.
BCSO says jail officials have notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards of the incident.
