SAN ANTONIO – A lit candle may have been the cause of an early morning West Side apartment fire, investigators say.
The fire started around 3:30 a.m. Monday at he Villas on Springvale off West U.S. Highway 90 near Springvale Drive.
When San Antonio Fire Department crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from three second-story apartments. That prompted firefighters to immediately evacuate the entire building.
Although a second alarm was briefly called for, firefighters were able to make a quick knockdown of the flames, preventing further damage to surrounding units.
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion. The extent of the firefighter’s condition was not immediately released.
Police said the fire may have started after a resident lit a candle and left the room. When the resident returned, the apartment was already on fire.
No word on how many people are displaced because of the damage.
The investigation is ongoing.
