Glaciers, vast wilderness and the northern lights await Phoenix travelers in 2026.

American Airlines announced it’s bringing back a seasonal route to Anchorage, Alaska, from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Flights will launch next spring.

Simultaneously, American announced it would increase the number of nonstop flights it offers between Phoenix and San Jose on the weekend of the 2026 Super Bowl.

The route reflects American’s “ongoing commitment to grow with our customers” with access to more leisure and business travel from Sky Harbor.

“As evident by the new Anchorage service, we’re continuing to add nonstop service from PHX to exciting destinations our customers are wanting to visit and enjoy,” Sophia Ortiz-Philis, vice president of American’s hub at Sky Harbor, said in a statement.

American will be the second airline to offer service to Anchorage, following Alaska Airlines. Anchorage is the only Alaskan airport with nonstop service to and from Phoenix.

When will American Airlines’ Phoenix-Anchorage flights begin?

American’s flights from Phoenix to Anchorage will begin May 21, 2026. The seasonal route will run through Sept. 8 and will fly aboard an Airbus A321neo.

Flights to Anchorage will leave Phoenix at 8:35 p.m. Arizona time and arrive at 1:29 a.m. Alaska Daylight Time the next day. Return flights will leave Anchorage at 11:55 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time and arrive in Phoenix at 6:24 a.m. Arizona time the next day.

Phoenix will be American’s third destination out of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It also operates seasonal flights twice-daily from Dallas and once-daily from Chicago.

Flights will be available for sale starting Oct. 6 on American’s website, aa.com.

Why do people want to go to Alaska?

Alaska is a popular destination with travelers because it has some of the most unique and stunning landscapes in the U.S., according to American Airlines.

Visiting glaciers, hiking mountains, wildlife viewing and water-based recreation on its rivers are among the reasons people visit Alaska.

American Airlines adds Super Bowl flights

Besides the new Phoenix-Anchorage flights, American announced it will increase its nonstop service between Phoenix and San Jose for the 2026 Super Bowl.

American will add three Phoenix-San Jose flights on Feb. 5 and 6 and two San Jose-Phoenix flights on Feb. 9. The Super Bowl will be played on Feb. 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, about six miles from San Jose Mineta International Airport.
