BOISE, Idaho — A bat discovered in front of the Owyhee Building on Main Street in Downtown Boise has tested positive for rabies, health officials confirmed on Thursday.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have come into contact with the bat to consult their primary care provider to determine if rabies shots are necessary. Additionally, individuals are advised to contact a Central District Health epidemiologist at (208) 375-5211 for further guidance.
While most bats do not carry rabies, the virus poses a serious health risk to both humans and pets. Health officials emphasize the importance of not handling bats with bare hands and recommend using thick gloves to safely contain the animal if necessary.
Residents are also encouraged to ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies, as pets may encounter bats both outdoors and indoors. Bat-proofing homes by maintaining tight-fitting screens on windows is advised, as bats can enter through holes as small as a quarter.
