Jacksonville’s Chief Administrative Officer is moving on, in what is the highest-profile departure from the Donna Deegan administration.
While details are sparse as to why Karen Bowling is leaving, it’s framed as an amicable exit.
“Karen has decided to step down from her role as the City of Jacksonville’s Chief Administrative Officer effective October 24,” wrote Mayor Deegan.
Bowling’s hire was among the first administration announcements. It preceded Deegan’s official swearing in as Mayor.
Deegan alluded to that in her statement.
“I’m truly grateful for her many years of service. Karen laid the foundation for our administration. She built an incredible team who smoothly transitioned us into office and made significant progress for Jacksonville. We wish her the best now and in the future.”
In the short term, Deegan said political veterans will fill the gap, with two particularly empowered.
“Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Kelli O’Leary will remain in her role and lead executive branch departments with support from Chief of Staff Mike Weinstein. We will evaluate additional Mayor’s Office staff needs after the holidays.”
Bowling has a long and storied history in the private and public sectors, with a number of prominent roles, but two stand out most.
She is the former CEO of Solantic Urgent Care, a company she co-founded with current U.S. Sen. Rick Scott in 2001.
She also was chief administrative officer for Jacksonville’s most recent former Democratic Mayor, Alvin Brown.
