A 16-year-old girl is fighting for her life, and a 17-year-old girl is recovering after the two were shot late Sunday near Manhattan’s Stonewall Inn, hours after the annual Pride March passed through the neighborhood.
Gunfire erupted around 10:15 p.m. in the West Village, which was busy with revelers celebrating the end of Pride celebrations near the landmarked inn. The younger girl was hit in the head and critically injured. The older victim was last said to be in stable condition and is expected to be OK. It wasn’t clear where she was struck.
Police had not confirmed any arrests as of early Monday. It’s not clear what prompted the shooting, nor if the girls were the intended targets.
It happened in Sheridan Square, a few steps away from the historic Stonewall Inn. The neighborhood attracted tens of thousands on Sunday for the annual parade and end to Pride Month commemorations.
Police did not share a possible motive or any suspect descriptions.
Police said at least two people were shot on Sunday, as Pride celebrations came to a close in New York City. NBC New York’s Charles Watson reports.
Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged the shooting in a late-night post on X.
“During a time when our city should be rejoicing and celebrating members of our diverse LGBTQ+ community, incidents like this are devastating,” he wrote in part. “We’re praying for the speedy recovery of the victims in tonight’s shooting. The NYPD will work quickly and tirelessly to bring the suspects to justice.”
