SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Independent School District is alerting families about a potential student protest planned for Tuesday, after receiving credible information that participants may be armed.
In a letter to families of students from Advanced Learning Academy-Tech, CAST Tech High School, and Fox Tech High School, SAISD says that while the district supports students’ First Amendment rights and encourages civic engagement, student safety remains the top priority.
“We received information about students possibly planning to protest on Tuesday, Oct. 7, during the school day, and we have credible evidence from area law enforcement that it will be an armed protest,” the letter stated.
The district says it does not know the identities of local organizers but that law enforcement has reported that some individuals have impersonated a school organization. SAISD has requested monitoring from the Southwest Texas Fusion Center, an inter-agency law enforcement center, to ensure safety.
Families are being urged to speak with their children and discourage participation due to safety concerns. Students who leave campus to participate may face consequences under the district’s student code of conduct, as well as extracurricular and campus organization rules.
The district states that is not taking a position on the topic of the protest itself, but rather acting out of concern for student and staff safety.
“Student safety is our highest priority at SAISD schools, and we want to keep families informed with accurate information,” the statement said.
SAISD officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available from law enforcement.
