The Santa Fe Christian (SFC) High School Choir took center field at Petco Park last month to perform the national anthem before a crowd of more than 40,000 fans at the San Diego Padres game. The performance marked a significant milestone for the growing music program, according to a news release.

The choir, led by newly appointed High School Choir Director Rachel Alessio, spent several weeks rehearsing in preparation for the big night.

“Last night was an incredible opportunity for our choir students to represent our school community and share their gifts and talents,” said Alessio in the news release. “Performing live in front of 40,000 people is no easy task, and I am so proud of the effort these students put into such a challenge—especially so early in the school year.”

The students practiced for weeks and even the final minutes before walking onto the field. They walked away with appreciation for the opportunity and were able to grow in their skills, taking pride in their program.

“Singing the national anthem at the Padres game helped establish our group as a strong choir early in the year, and bonded us together as we worked so hard on the piece,” said Jazzy Laflamme, a SFC student and choir president, in the news release. “I am so glad that SFC gave us this amazing opportunity!”
