San Antonio avant-metal act The Grasshopper Lies Heavy will drop a new album next month — it’s seventh, by our count — and if its name and first single are any indication, this shit isn’t for the pinkies-out crowd.
HEAVY is due out Nov. 14 on Minneapolis’ Learning Curve Records, and Grasshopper frontman James Woodard promises the title is an indication of just what’s contained within.
While most Grasshopper’s releases incorporate a blend of the band’s sludgy, mathy noise-rock and moodier, more-dynamic pieces, this one is comprised of eight crushers. A forthcoming companion album called LIES will focus on the lighter side of the band’s Jeckyl-and-Hyde sound, according to Woodard.
“Because of that approach, it’s probably the most focused thing we’ve done,” he said of HEAVY.
Those looking for a sample of Grasshopper’s finely honed heaviness can access the release’s first single, “We Are All the Antichrist,” an off-kilter riff monster featuring guest vocals by Crow Lotus of the band Capra. An accompanying video showcases all the chaos, rage and misanthropy one would expect from such a collaboration.
Those who want to road test HEAVY live can check out the band’s release show, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Lonesome Rose. Bat Lips and Virtual Limbs will open.
$10, 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, Lonesome Rose, 2114 N. St. Mary’s St., (210) 455-0233, thelonesomerose.com.
