The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for October, and some jobs pay more than others.

Exam applications currently open include: assistant mechanical engineer; custodian; emergency medical specialist – EMT; emergency medical specialist trainee; occupational therapist (DOE); physical therapist (DOE); police officer; program officer (Department for the Aging); and public health nurse.
The starting salary for each career varies, according to the city.
Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers.
Most of these exams have a deadline of Oct. 21. The exams for emergency medical specialist – EMT and emergency medical specialist trainee are open until Nov. 25, while the exam for police officer is open until Oct. 14.
Additionally, the exam for correction officer remains open until Oct. 29.

Assistant mechanical engineer
Salary: $66,330

Job description: difficulty and responsibility and may supervise subordinate employees. They perform engineering calculations using college level math; perform design work on mechanical parts, basic plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and water distribution systems; prepare quantity estimates, cost estimates, memos, reports, letters and specifications; review manufacturers’ catalogs and samples, drawings (shop, plan, construction, design), shop testing procedures for mechanical equipment to meet standards and outside consultants’ designs; take photographs of project sites and details of existing buildings; take and verify measurements of buildings, bridges and mechanical parts; develop drawings of proposed and final designs, mechanical component sections and details; attend meetings with developers, contractors, architects and fabricators; participate in inspection operations by observing, checking and certifying the installation of materials and equipment; attest to equipment performance and test results of materials; research reference materials; may drive a motor vehicle or take public transportation to various work sites.
Custodian
Salary: $38,594

Job description: This class of positions encompasses responsible supervisory work involved in overseeing custodial services in public buildings other than schools and colleges. There are four Assignment Levels within this class of positions. At Assignment Level I: Custodians, under supervision, perform work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility, which may entail supervision, in the cleaning, operation and maintenance of one or more small buildings and their immediate grounds and in the enforcement of safety requirements in such assigned areas; or, in a medium sized building, supervise cleaners on an assigned shift. They supervise a small number of cleaners, performing such tasks as sweeping, dusting, mopping, polishing, waxing, gathering and disposing of refuse; cleaning and removing snow from walks; maintaining lawns and shrubs; operating a low pressure heating system and cleaning the boiler parts; perform these tasks in buildings where no subordinate staff is assigned; inspect the building and grounds to note general condition and necessity for repairs; check work performance, assure the proper use, cleanliness and storage of tools; arrange for and may assist in the moving of furniture and equipment; may serve as Fire Safety Directors; enforce safety requirements and protect the building and grounds from vandalism; requisition fuels and stores; issue supplies and equipment, estimate janitorial material requirements; keep inventories, time sheets and other records; prepare reports on work activities, accidents and unusual conditions; may make minor repairs; report conditions requiring the services of mechanics; may clean, adjust, lubricate and make minor repairs to oil burners, pumps, fans, booklifts, ash lifts, and other mechanical equipment; may perform the duties of subordinates, as needed.
Emergency medical specialist – EMT
Salary: $39,386

Job description: Emergency Medical Specialists – EMTs, under general supervision, perform tasks such as the following: provide timely, professional, pre-hospital emergency medical care/Basic Life Support (BLS) to anyone who requests/requires it; provide transportation to the appropriate medical facility; operate department vehicles; receive, prioritize and dispatch calls for emergency medical assistance; and provide patient care under the authorization of the Medical Director. All work is performed in accordance with FDNY policies and procedures and as legislatively prescribed in the requisite curriculum and allowed by Federal/New York State/Regional BLS Protocols and in accordance with the level of training, New York State designated scope of practice and New York State and Regional BLS Protocols. Emergency Medical Specialists – EMTs also prepare and submit reports as required and may be assigned to work in any FDNY facility, as needed.
Emergency medical specialist trainee
Salary: $36,330

Job description: Emergency Medical Specialist Trainees attend a training program conducted by the New York City Fire Department. Emergency Medical Specialist Trainees receive Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and emergency medical service operations training and instruction covering basic anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology of emergency medicine, basic treatment modalities for health related emergencies, hazardous materials orientation, NYS Right to Know Laws, blood borne pathogens and infectious disease control, clinical assessment skills, multiple casualty incident (MCI) management, emergency vehicle operations, and related topics. Emergency Medical Specialist Trainees are given practice in applicable patient treatment skills and perform clinical rotations in the field and in hospitals.
Occupational therapist (DOE)
Salary: $82,807

Job description: Therapy services to students with disabilities which may include an itinerant component, of which an assignment includes duties in more than one work location in a given day and/or week. Job duties include but are not limited to evaluating students to determine the need for Occupational Therapy, provision of inclusive services, developing therapeutic treatment plans, and incorporating individualized classroom routines, adapting the environment and modifying tasks to facilitate the students’ participation in schoolbased activities including adapting the environment to foster a conducive atmosphere for learning and social participation, and utilizing computer systems in connection with assignment and documentation.

Police officer

Program officer (Department for the Aging)

Job description: Program Officers (Department for the Aging), under broad supervision with latitude for independent judgment and initiative, assess programs and budgets with contractors, in accordance with Department for the Aging’s established policies, procedures, program standards, budgetary constraints and social service priorities; visit field operations, determine program compliance, identify areas of program strength and weakness and recommend improvements, and evaluate quality of community services; convey agency policy and provide technical assistance to contractors and community groups; gather and analyze data for preparation of plans, reports, continuous quality indicators and/or proposals in conjunction with staff from other Department bureaus and units; promote planning of new and additional resources and perform activities relating to their implementation, make improvements to program assessment tools, provide input on Request for Proposals, and serve as a reader in the process; review budget modifications and approve invoices; participate in special projects and agency initiatives including program expansions and pilots.
