Polytechnic Heights Neighborhood Association is going all out for its National Night Out block party.

The group’s event is one of dozens planned for Tuesday across Fort Worth to mark the annual community-building event.

More than a dozen local businesses and organizations are collaborating with the Poly neighborhood association to offer food, music and activities, including a mariachi band and folklorico dancers in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Poly event will also host student groups from Texas Wesleyan University including the college’s baseball team.

Reba Henry, a member of the association, said the goal is to encourage people to know their neighbors.

“Polytechnic is a diverse community, and there is no one tactic that will fit all,” Henry said. “People need to just be more open to each other.”

National Night Out began in 1984 in coordination with law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups and civic groups.

The event is held to bolster connections between community members and local law enforcement who attend the block parties. The inroads between residents and first responders are meant to prevent crime.

The community event is now held in thousands of neighborhoods across the United States on the first Tuesday in August. However, Texas and other areas with intense summer heat celebrate on the First Tuesday in October instead.
