A dog and a 40-year-old Long Beach man died by accidental drowning in the Los Angeles river, authorities said, after he may have slipped into the water.

At about 3:15 p.m. on Friday, June 27, a call came in and firefighters were dispatched and performed a water rescue after four people were spotted at the edge of the LA riverbed.

Krhystopher Lemus drowned and a four-year-old child was transported to a trauma center with unknown injuries, Long Beach Fire Capt. Dennis Garrett said.

The water levels were not higher than usual.

Additional details on the condition of the child were not released. No injuries were reported for the other two people.

Witnesses reported seeing the group at the edge of the river near Anaheim Street. Officials believe some may have slipped into the water during some sort of recreational activity.
