The first trailer for Project Hail Mary has arrived, and the buzz is already nearing stratospheric levels. The much-anticipated film adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2022 sci-fi novel stars Ryan Gosling as a middle-school science teacher turned astronaut, and sees Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing.
On the heels of the trailer’s release, Project Hail Mary (the novel) has rocketed back to the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s Science Fiction Adventures best-sellers chart. The uber-popular novel has garnered awards and acclaim from both critics and fans, and it makes a great pick for summer reading ahead of the film’s March 2026 release date. Project Hail Mary: A Novel
Like The Martian, Weir’s other best-seller with a film adaptation, Project Hail Mary is part sci-fi adventure, part comedy. It centers on Ryland Grace (Gosling), a middle-school teacher tasked with using his doctorate in molecular biology to save the suddenly-dying sun. But there are a couple of problems: he claims he’s not an astronaut, and the rest of his crew is dead. Things get more complicated when the scientists realize that it’s not only our sun. Every star, except one, is dying. Grace must embark on a solo journey to the singular healthy star to learn its secret.
Project Hail Mary has become a smash hit since its release in 2022, winning several awards and receiving very positive reviews from readers. The book currently has a 4.5/5-star rating on Amazon with more than 150,000 reviews. “Just run out and buy this book,” says one reviewer.
