The Connor McDavid contract wasn’t the only bit of business the Edmonton Oilers accomplished on Monday. They also extended defenseman Jake Walman to a seven-year, $7 million AAV deal.

The Oilers acquired Walman just before the trade deadline last season from the San Jose Sharks, relinquishing a 2026 first-round pick to get him. The left-shot blueliner proved to be a near seamless fit to the team, providing an ability to play both sides and on special teams when needed.
He recorded a goal and eight points in 15 regular-season games after the trade before notching two goals and 10 points while appearing in all 22 playoff contests as the Oilers reached their second straight Stanley Cup Final.
Walman, 29, is expected to take on a potentially bigger role in his first full season as an Oiler. He’s projected to be slotted to the right of veteran Darnell Nurse on the second pair.
Walman was limited to one preseason game because of an undisclosed injury. He’s questionable for Wednesday’s season opener against the Calgary Flames, according to coach Kris Knoblauch, but is expected to play in Saturday’s contest versus the Vancouver Canucks either way.
He was entering the last year of his $3.6 million AAV deal signed with the Detroit Red Wings in February 2023.
