“Any time we have that much violence in a weekend, it’s very unfortunate,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said.
DALLAS — With six homicides within less than 24 hours, Dallas and DART Police chiefs say they are tracking suspects as quickly as they can, while also trying to reassure the public that the overall violent crime rate is actually down.
“It’s a very unfortunate weekend,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux told WFAA. “Any time we have that much violence in a weekend it’s very unfortunate.”
At 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Dallas police responded to a shooting call at 8800 Ferguson Road. Inside an apartment they found one person dead, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Torres. A second person was also injured.
Roughly five hours later DPD responded to a shooting with three people dead at 3800 Bernal Drive. The victims included a father and son, identified as Petro Lara Arroa, 47, and his son Pedro Lara, 21.
Then at about 6:35 a.m., Dallas police responded to a stabbing call in the 2600 block of Myrtle Springs Avenue. Police found a pregnant woman had been stabbed by an unknown suspect. She was taken to the hospital and survived but police say her unborn fetus did not.
The investigation is ongoing, but when asked if this might be a domestic violence situation, Comeaux said police have a good lead right now.
Then at about 8 p.m. Sunday, a man was shot dead at the DART Pearl/Arts District Station, the second fatal shooting at a DART facility in the past week.
“There’s no one in custody at this point,” DART Police Chief Charles Cato told WFAA. “It was very focused between these two people. We hope to identify and arrest the suspects, and ask those questions as to why, or at least determine through the investigative process what, if any, relationship they had or what caused this, this interaction to take place and escalate to the level that it did.”
Dallas police are also investigating a shooting that happened midday Sunday outside a Victory Park restaurant. A young woman is in critical condition after being shot multiple times. Comeaux tells WFAA they have a suspect in custody for an attack they believe is an act of domestic violence.
“One of the things I do want to point out is the reduction of crime violent crime in the area and we are down, still, 43 murders from last year at this time,” Comeax said when asked about the violent weekend. “We still have the violent crime plan in place because it was working and successful. The piece that we’ve added is going after all those people that have felony warrants.”
