PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A prescribed burn in west Phoenix is sending thick, white smoke into the air on Tuesday.
The burn operation will help restore vital riparian habitat while serving as a training exercise for Phoenix firefighters.
The City of Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) are working together on a prescribed burn at the Tres Rios Wetlands near 91st Avenue and Broadway Road.

The prescribed helps eliminate invasive plant species and provides nutrients to the soil, making it an essential management tool for the wetlands. It will also provide Phoenix firefighters with important wildfire training.
91st Avenue will be closed from the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant North Gate to Baseline Road during the burn. Traffic along Broadway Road will be more congested than usual.
The burn operation is expected to last until 4 p.m.
