ALBANY, N.Y. — As the federal government shutdown continues across the country, New York leaders are looking ahead to what happens if the state’s budget isn’t passed on time.

A new bill proposed in the state senate would make legislators and the governor forfeit their pay if the April 1 deadline isn’t met, which happens frequently.

Under the state’s current laws, the governor is still paid if the state budget deadline is missed, while state legislators have their pay withheld and receive back pay once it passes.
