San Antonio — After weeks in the hospital recovering from surgeries, 84-year-old Kent Bell was finally home with his wife, Debra. Their joy quickly turned to terror.

Just minutes after arriving, Kent’s surgical incision split open — blood pouring across their foyer.

“I was so, so scared that I was going to lose my husband right here in our home,” Debra recalled.

In panic, she turned to her neighbor, Jessica Vargas. The caretaker, who looks after her elderly father, grabbed an ACE bandage and applied pressure to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

“She is my hero. She is Kent’s hero. Children have superheroes, and adults can have superheroes too. And Jessica Vargas is our superhero,” Debra said.

Kent lost two pints of blood that day. He remains in recovery after multiple surgeries to save his leg — but he made sure Jessica heard his gratitude.

“You saved my life. You saved me from bleeding to death. I’m forever indebted to you,” Kent said in a recorded message.

This week, FOX SA’s Cash for Kindness stepped in to honor Jessica for her lifesaving act. She was surprised with $1,000, courtesy of Air & Plumbing Today.

“Just be kind. We don’t do it for rewards or recognition. Just do it because we love them,” Jessica said.

A near tragedy turned into a miracle — thanks to a neighbor’s courage, and the love that saved a life.
