Steven Gerrard is set for talks with the Rangers hierarchy on Thursday over the club’s vacant managerial position.
Gerrard, 45, has been out of management since departing Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq by mutual consent in January.
The former Liverpool and England captain spent three years in charge of Rangers between 2018 and 2021, winning the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title — the club’s first in a decade.
Rangers parted company with Russell Martin on Sunday following four months in charge.
Martin, 39, departed after winning just one of seven Scottish Premiership matches to leave Rangers eighth, 11 points behind leaders Hearts.
Rangers also missed out on a spot in this season’s Champions League after being beaten 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the competition’s third qualifying round.
Gerrard retired from playing in 2016 and began his coaching career in Liverpool’s youth teams. His appointment as Rangers manager in the summer of 2018 represented his first senior head coach role.
He led the club to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title — their first since their liquidation and demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football in 2012 — alongside the round-of-16 stage of that season’s Europa League.
Gerrard left Rangers in November 2021 to join Aston Villa. He was dismissed after 11 months at Villa Park, with the club having won just two of their opening 12 Premier League games of 2022–23.
He moved to Al Ettifaq in July 2023 in a summer transfer window that saw a number of high-profile players join the Saudi Pro League. He led Al Ettifaq to a sixth-place finish during his debut season in charge, but was dismissed at the beginning of 2025 with the club 12th in the top flight.
Rangers return to action against Dundee United on October 18.
